Protect Yourself and Your Computer

If you aren’t running the latest version of virus protection on your computer, your system is vulnerable to attacks by hackers, spyware, and computer viruses. Without security programs, even if you never download a single file or open the first email message, you can still end up with a compromised machine. Here are a few of the ways that hackers can take advantage of an unsecured system:

1. Hidden Installations
When you visit a hacker’s site, either by mistake or because they’ve advertised it as something else, a smart programmer can install code on your machine without your knowledge. In fact, you don’t even have a hint that it’s happening if you’re not running any anti-virus or anti-spyware programs. This type of invasion is very hard to eliminate because the details are usually embedded within the system files.

2. Pop-up Installations
Sometimes, a hacker will create a pop-up message that looks very much like a valid warning message from your operating system. If you click on the “OK” button without thinking, you could be giving permission for a spyware installation. In some cases, the same thing will happen if you click “cancel” or even the “x” in the upper-right corner. As a best practice, always use the task manager to cancel this window without touching the pop up window.

3. Hijacking Code
Although open-source code is wonderful, it does offer another strategy for hackers. These programmers can easily get a copy of the code, add a little bit of their own, and advertise it as a valuable free download. To minimize suspicion, you’ll get what you were looking for, but you’ll also get a little spyware as a bonus.

If you’ve noticed your hp desktop computers and laptops becoming slower and slower or suddenly opening programs you’ve never used before, you might be infected. In addition to the many anti-virus and anti-spyware programs that are available, you can find cleaners to remove malicious code from your computer.
