Using Your iPhone for Email

There are many cell phones on the market that let you check your email on the go, but unless you have a smart phone, your email options can be limited. Having a smart phone is like having a mini computer in your pocket, and the iPhone is no exception.

You can sync your iPhone with a variety of email accounts. The ones that are programed into the system are Microsoft Exchange, MobileMe, Gmail, Yahoo! and AOL. When you first enter an account into your phone, go to your settings, then scroll down to Mail, Contacts, Calendars. From there you click Add Account, then choose your email provider and enter in your account information. Back in the Mail, Contacts, Calendars window you can go to Fetch New Data and choose how often you want the iPhone to sync up with your email and update your inbox.

Sending emails from your iPhone is simple. Tap on your Mail icon, then go to your email account. At the bottom right is a little square with a pencil. Tap it to open up a New Message window. When you start to type the destination address, options from your contact list should appear.

When you’re typing the body of your message, be careful with spelling. You can purchase a separate app for spell checking, but be aware that it’s not a standard email feature. The iPhone’s auto correct is great, if not a little over enthusiastic. Once while trying to make dinner plans the auto correct changed, “How about CiCi?” to something far more sexually explicit. If needed, you can turn off the auto correct in your Settings.

Don’t forget about your signature. The default signature is, “Sent from my iPhone.” Most people use a spelling disclaimer. My signature reads, “Please forgive any spelling or punctuation errors. This was sent from my iPhone, and I have stubby fingers.” You can change your signature under Mail, Contacts, Calendar.
